Learning Unfamiliar Words From Context Carefully

Context can suggest what an unfamiliar word means, but it may not provide a precise definition.

Context can suggest what an unfamiliar word means, but it may not provide a precise definition. Use the surrounding sentence as a hypothesis and verify important terms before building further reasoning on them.

Read with a purpose

Read the entire sentence and nearby explanation. Identify the word's role and look for examples, contrasts, or a definition. Make a tentative interpretation, then check a reliable dictionary or subject source when the term matters. Technical usage may differ from everyday meaning, so select the sense appropriate to the passage rather than the first entry you encounter.

Work through the text

In an economics reading, elastic does not simply mean physically stretchy. The surrounding discussion may suggest responsiveness to a change in another quantity. Verify the technical meaning, return to the sentence, and explain it with a simple example. Then examine a second occurrence. This confirms whether the new definition actually fits the text and prevents a familiar everyday meaning from silently replacing the concept the author is using.

Check your understanding

Do not interrupt every sentence to investigate every unknown word equally. Prioritize terms essential to the argument and mark less important ones for later. If several key terms remain unclear, a short background lesson may be more efficient than individual lookups. Keep definitions connected to the original context so your vocabulary notes remain usable.

Put it into practice

Try it in your next study session

  1. Use a topic that matters to you and infer one important word's meaning and record the contextual clues.
  2. Verify the appropriate sense, explain the original sentence again, and test the meaning in a second checked example.
  3. Return to the original sentence after checking the definition and explain why the selected sense fits. If it does not fit smoothly, inspect another meaning or consult a subject source. Save the contextual example with the word so later review does not detach the definition from the use you intended to learn.
Take this with youUse context to form a provisional meaning and reliable references to refine essential terms accurately.
